We are fortunate to live in a county with many unique characters and artistic legends who have made a life outside of the box and are examples of genuine, authentic and successful people living their own vision. JLCC dedicates service days in the community to support the mission and work of these admirable and brave waymakers.
2024- 2025
One individual is Siglinda Scarpa, founder of The Goathouse Refuge. Her life story is book worthy, having escaped Nazi Germany and ended up here in Chatham County, a creator of a beautiful niche and service to our community.
She is a talented artist who donates profits from her pottery to her nonprofit, which provides a two-acre sanctuary for cats. She has been featured on The Today Show, in a myriad of publications, but most importantly is a local legend and treasure.
The Goathouse Refuge is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, no-kill animal sanctuary dedicated to providing cage-free care for cats regardless of age, medical issues or disposition until a permanent loving adoptive home can be found. Visiting Hours: Saturday and Sunday 11am-3pm, Fridays by appointment
Dr. Halford House, Bioremediation Resource Recovery Systems LLC
Dr. House’s vision and creation of North Carolina’s first integrated water system has enabled the rebirth of occupancy at and care of our building. He has been a highly regarded professor at multiple universities, including North Carolina State. His pioneering work has been the subject of studies by the University of Chapel Hill and his model for water integration remains revolutionary. The building remains a tour stop for local colleges and passionate environmentalists due to Dr. House’s work. JLCC is engaged in growing native plants and placing them in the system for reclaimed water promoting optimal benefit and proficiency of the system.
